Head Of School Review of The Week

Children’s Mental Health Week at FHIS

This week, our school has celebrated Children’s Mental Health Week, a special time to focus on the well-being of our students. Throughout the week, children took part in activities designed to support and promote positive mental health.

Students are exploring what makes them unique and special, helping them build confidence and self-esteem. They are also learning to recognise and name their feelings, an important step in understanding and managing emotions.

These activities encourage open conversations about emotions, kindness, and self-awareness, creating a supportive environment where every child feels valued and heard.

We are proud to celebrate mental health and well-being in our school and encourage families to continue these conversations at home.

Attendance Matters

Attendance is a priority concern as part of our commitment to safeguarding every child. We believe that children can only reach their full potential through regular, full-time education.

🎯Our Attendance Target

At Falconer's Hill Infant School, we aim for all pupils to achieve at least 96% attendance.

✅  Why 96%?
Pupils with 96% or higher attendance gain a significant advantage — that’s at least 62 more hours of learning compared to a child with just 90% attendance.

Let’s work together to support our children’s education and make every school day count!

This Week's Attendance
9th February 13th February

Here’s how each class did this week with their attendance:

🌰 Chestnut – 98%
🍁 Sycamore – 97%
🌿 Ash – 94%
🍂 Maple – 97%
🌳 Oak – 97%
🌼 Willow – 100%

🏫 Whole School Attendance –  97%

🥇 Congratulations to Willow Class for achieving 100% attendance this week! You’ve earned the Attendance Cup! Well done!

Let's keep up the great attendance at our school — every day counts!

Illness and Persistent Absence

Did you know that if your child has 2 days off this term, they will be considered as persistently absent?

Persistently absent is where your child’s attendance falls below 96%.

Attendance to school has a significant impact on your child’s success in life. In many cases where attendance is lower, this can negatively impact a child both academically and socially and emotionally. By missing school, children can miss key learning and opportunities to socialise and build friendships with their peers.

As a school, we understand that at this time of year, there are many illnesses going around and appreciate that keeping children well and healthy during the winter months can be a challenge. However, as a school, we have a duty of care to inform you of concerns regarding your child’s attendance. New legislation in place for schools, means that we have a legal obligation to report cases of persistent absence from school to the local authority, which may result in a fine or meetings with the local authority attendance officer.

Your child's attendance impacts progress academically, as well as socially; it is our shared priority.

  • 95% attendance = 9 days of missed learning
  • 90% attendance = 19 days of missed learning
  • 85% attendance = 28 days of missed learning
  • 80% attendance = 38 days of missed learning

We guide you to refer to the NHS illness information if you are unsure whether you should send your child to school or speak to a member of the attendance team, who will be more than happy to work with you to ensure your child is best supported and happily attending school.

Attendance Reminder

We kindly ask all parents and carers to contact the school as early as possible if your child is going to be absent.
You can notify us via:

  • Telephone: 01327 702878 – Office hours are 8am-4pm but leaving a voicemail is an option
  • Email: admin@fhis.inmat.org.uk
  • Seesaw message: Ideally to Mrs Griifiths or Mrs Orme

If your child has a medical appointment, please inform the school office in advance.
Where possible, please provide appointment letters, cards, or confirmation messages so we can update our records accurately.

Early communication helps us keep our attendance records accurate and supports the wellbeing of all our students.

Thank you for your support and cooperation.

School Office Foyer

If you are in the school office foyer, we kindly ask that you do not let other visitors in.

We appreciate the politeness, but this is an important part of keeping everyone safe and maintaining privacy within our school.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Respectful Language & Behaviour on School Grounds

We kindly remind parents, carers, and visitors to use kind and respectful language at all times on the school site. Swearing, hand gestures or unkind words are not appropriate, as we aim to set a positive example for our children and maintain a caring, welcoming environment for everyone.

Safer Internet Day at Falconer’s Hill Infant School

Falconer’s Hill Infant School celebrated Safer Internet Day with a special focus on helping children understand how to use technology safely and responsibly. Pupils learnt about Artificial Intelligence (AI) in an age-appropriate way, exploring what AI is, how it can help us, and why it’s important to use it safely and ask a trusted adult if something doesn’t seem right.

As part of their e-safety learning, children revisited key online safety messages with Smartie the Penguin from Childnet. Through stories and discussions, they were reminded about what to do if they ever feel worried or unsure online.

Each class also designed their own version of the school’s “Stop, Block, Tell” poster. This important message reminds everyone that if they see something online that makes them uncomfortable, they should Stop using it, Block what’s bothering them, and Tell a trusted adult straight away.

Year 2 Big Sing Competition

This year, the theme of our Year 2 Big Sing at the Royal & Derngate Theatre is “At the Zoo” 🦁🐘🦒

We are excited to announce a brand-new competition linked to this event! One outstanding piece of artwork from across the school will be selected to be showcased on the stage at the theatre.

All children are invited to take part by creating one piece of artwork inspired by animals that live at the zoo. This can be:

  • A drawing
  • A painting
  • A craft or mixed-media piece

Please ensure that all artwork is clearly labelled with your child’s name and age.

Only one piece of artwork will be chosen to be displayed, so children are encouraged to take their time and make it their very best effort.

We can’t wait to see the wonderful, creative zoo-inspired artwork from across the school.
