Science

Intent:

At FHIS we provide children with a challenging and engaging science curriculum that teaches children how to discover and wonder about the world around them. We aim to inspire children to care for their natural world and be curious about it. We want our children to have the courage to ask their own questions and discuss questions with others. We want our children to make predictions, observations and reflect on the results of simple tests. By the end of Year 2, children will leave FHIS with a curiosity for finding out more about the world they live in and the processes within it.

We aim to build on scientific knowledge, understanding and skills. From the early years’ children are exposed to investigations and questions that inspire scientific thinking. We are building on children’s natural curiosity, giving them the desire to explore and investigate the world around them.

Implementation:

We motivate and enthuse pupils by creating deep links with other curriculum areas including maths, science, history and art. Wherever possible, we use first-hand experiences such as investigations and experiments to deepen their understanding of scientific processes. We aim to provide some off-site/ in school experiences with a specific scientific focus. This ensures that we are bringing awe and wonder to science and that science is delivered in an engaging way.

Our science curriculum is designed to allow children time to think, discuss, practise, explore and embed. This allows time for teaching, practice and repetition. Curriculum coverage is mapped out carefully from EYFS to Year 2 which allows some key concepts to be developed at a deeper level of learning and understanding. Fundamental knowledge and skills are covered at key points throughout the key stage 1 phase and repeated to allow pupils to build on what has been taught before. Lessons will be planned and a knowledge organiser provided for pupils, which outlines the area to be taught, where the new knowledge and skills fit in with their prior learning, any sticky knowledge they need to understand and key vocabulary they need to learn.
